The Victorians were well known to have their own language of flowers. In fact, during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 - 1901) this knowledge was as important to people as being well dressed. The obvious interpretation of the rose is that of love, yet each color carried it's own specific meaning. Here this sweet spaniel offers a pink rose, symbolizing admiration as well as love and with his little uplifted paw as an additional gesture, well how could any girl refuse. He almost seems to be smiling at her while his eyes must nearly display the feelings of his master. This beautifully shaped pendant, which appears to have once been a locket, can be worn on a chain or a ribbon and is just the loveliest face on a dog that I have ever seen. I fell for it the minute I laid eyes on him!
Condition: Very good; minor surface scratches
Metal: 14kt or 15kt yellow gold; untested
Circa: 1890

"Holbeinesque" jewelry was one of the early manifestations of the 1870s Renaissance revival style, characterized by a large oval gemstone mounted in gold and enameled with the ubiquitous quatrefoil motif. This magnificent pendant is a supreme example. The central oval garnet cabochon is surrounded by this quatrefoil design in red, green and blue champlevé enamel on 18kt gold interspersed with six square set chrysoberyl jewels. A beautifully enameled bale sits atop the pendant and an additional enamel fitting secures a diamond shaped drop of 4 square cut chrysoberyls accented with a trefoil design of three golden orbs.
The reverse is almost as stunning with its elaborately hand engraved scroll and floral design surrounding an oval glass hair locket compartment.
Condition:Very Good; scratches on the garnet
Measurement: 2 5/8" in length by 1 1/4" in width
Gross Weight: 10.5 dwt (17.7 grams)
Circa: 1870-1880; English in origin
NOTE: Unsigned but most likely Hancock's of London

Sentimental jewelry was quite popular in the Victorian era when overt expression of emotions was highly checked. Often these items contained hearts and flowers, frequently together. Gifts of this kind were one way to express one's sentiment to a loved one, be it friend or family. These tiny heart earrings in rose gold are just one example. Today these would make the same impression; one of love and affection for the recipient.
