| Paste jewelry became popular in England and France during the 18th century due in part to the demand of the middle class for inexpensive jewelry. Additionally, the upper class often carried paste jewelry on their travels to help deter highway robbery. The definition of paste is "high content leaded glass which is faceted to imitate gemstones" and is usually backed with foil to enliven the color. The stones were cut by the same diamond cutters who cut the more expensive stones; and they used the same cutting techniques. This necklace contains 44 pastes measuring 6-6.50mm in diameter with the largest stone at the tongue style clasp, measuring 7mm. As was typical, the stones are collet set in siver. Most of the stones are quite white with a few casting a slight yellowish hue. These pieces where intended to be worn in candlelight and the sparkle and brilliance is dazzling. Each stone is connected slightly higher than center to ensure that the necklace hangs perfectly and doesn't flip over. All in all, a beautiful and elegant look. Circa 1850. Condition is very good; missing excellent just by the few slightly yellow stones. 14" in length | ||||||||
