Circa 1890, the heel to toe measurement on this single lotus shoe is under 3". The embroidery on the front section of the vamp is a combination of chain and couching stitches using the finest metalic thread that I have ever seen. The couching thread towards the heel is the usual standard thickness and was clearly also original to the shoe. There is a little evidence of wear, the vamp is a bit dirty, and the original leather stripe on the sole heel is missing. But this is such a rare shoe ...click for details

This flap style hat was commonly used by the men in the cold winters of Northern China, formerly Manchuria, now considered Heilungjiang Province. Padded and lined with silk velvet fabric on the inside and covered with silk satin fabric on the outside, the different layers were quilted together with a decorative floral pattern.

This Chinese ethnic minority hat is elaborately decorated with embroidery stitching called Diaz which is a slightly more complicated version of the seed stitch. With silver Buddhas on the front and silver butterfly with bells at the back, this Miao hat protected the wearer from evil spirits. This winter hat is well padded and extends at the back to protect the neck from the cold wind.

Both of the sides and the soles of these lotus shoes are covered with an elaborate satin stitched floral motif. The background fabric is black cotton, so it is assumed that they were made by a woman with excellent needlework skills and limited finances. Their use must have been very special to her. Clearly, these shoes had some limited use and show some dirt, and the cream colored fabric of the soles show some pink dye runs from the embroidery threads.

These Chinese eyeglasses have lightly tinted lenses in a tortoise shell frames. Eye ware was favored by the Chinese because it was felt that they enhanced ones age appearance i.e. made the wearer appear older than their chronological age. The spectacles are detailed with a carved design at the nose bridge and have hinged side pieces which end in a circular stop which was very typical of the Chinese eye ware of the period.

This antique eyeglass case is finely needlepointed on both sides with matching traditional Chinese patterns, and banded with black silk. There is a very nice carved toggle bead which slides on a hand made cord to keep the case closed, and a long silk tassel which hangs from the bottom for added decoration. Both sides of the case show a bit of dirt and wear.

From Ibaden, Nigeria this traditional Yoruba cloth was woven by the men of the village. It was worn tied around the waist of the woman, and used as a baby carrier. This piece was brought back from Aftica in 1961. Hand loomed of cotton fibers, it has a wonderful soft color and texture. It measures 10" wide and 68" long including fringe.

This deep red lacquer Japanese inro has 4 compartments and black lacquer interior. The brown cord connects the clear crystal ojime and etched bone netsuke. The inro and netsuke are in excellant condition. The ojime has surface chips as shown in photo enlargement #3

This girl doll stand 6.5 inches high. Her costume is complete and in very good condition with the exception that the front of her tunic and pants are slightly sun faded when compared to the back. Her face is slightly darkened from exposure to the sun.

This antique Japanese cloisonne plate is extensively decorated with border pattern and 8 panels of flowers and butterflies. The center medallion depicts a bird in flight with a brown goldstone background. The back is heavily enameled with dark green in a sculptural wave pattern. All this is packed into the surface of the plate which is a mere 6 inches across.
