Carved from bamboo, this charming old Chinese brush rest was shipped back to the US by an American missionary Rebecca Cloud Stewart. It was designed to hold 2 mid-sized brushes. The name Huang Hua Fu is written on the back. Possibly he was one of China's less prosperous calligraphers. 3.5" x 3.5" it is in very good condition.

This is a traditional old style Chinese doodoo which is worn buttoned to the front of a womans shirt. It is made of black cotton fabric and embroidered with silk thread using a satin stitch. The motif is typical Miao...birds and flowers. It is in good condition appears slightly faded. This piece measures approx 11" X 11" and would look very nice framed. Age approx 65 yrs old

These early Qing dynasty cups were carved from coconut shell, and lined with metal which was originally coated with silver. The Chinese believed that silver would tarnish when in contact with poison. Many wealthy Chinese liked to use silver lined cups and chopsticks tipped with silver fittings was an assurance against poisoning. This ethnographic artifact is a seated ancestor female figure carved from goat's horn. It is from one of the Indonesian Islands by one of the indigenous Dayak tribes. The horn is in good condition with no chips or losses and stands approximately 6 inches tall.

This fan case is made from silk satin Chinese midnight blue fabric and the edges were hand-bound with black thread. Each side of the fan case is embroidered with the finest tiny stitches. Silk thread was used to form the tiny seed stitches of the butterflies and flowers and metalic wrapped thread was used to couch the outline of the leaves. The elaborate traditional Chinese cloud pattern at the top of the fan case was formed using the couched metalic wrapped threads in a tiny looped pattern. ...click for details
