This antique Japanese cloisonne plate is extensively decorated with border pattern and 8 panels of flowers and butterflies. The center medallion depicts a bird in flight with a brown goldstone background. The back is heavily enameled with dark green in a sculptural wave pattern. All this is packed into the surface of the plate which is a mere 6 inches across.
So typical of the old Japanese ethnographic objects, the design of this Edo period single candle stand is totally simple and wonderfully functional. With a lighted candle, this Japanese candlestand could be easily carried about the house by use of long very gently curved handle. The top of this black lacquer Japanese box is heavily carved with leaves and foliage. The carved oval cinnabar panel in the center depicts a long and stable marriage scene. The standing wife has just served her sitting husband tea in the garden, outside the house surrounded by mountains. The four sides of the box are carved with continuous textile design.
The box is 5.5 inches x 4.75 inches and 2+ inches high.
This Japanese cloisonne vase is decorated with flowers and butterflies against a black background, with 3 dark brown and 3 light brown panels and several border bands. The goldstone flecks are abundant but unfortunately they do not show in the photos. The vase is 8+ inches tall and in very good condition.
Rare Japanese antique box. Body of box has treebark finish. The top has 2 very fine lacquerware pieces depicting cranes and irises. The keyhole escheon is floral shaped and is incised. Sorry, no key, condition is very good. 10.5 x 3.5 x 2.5
Lovely gold rimmed Meiji Period Japanese cloisonne charger with intricate floral pattern.
The original import label is still attached to the back of the piece. The label indicates that the piece was imported to the US by the A A VanTine of New York, who was one of the first importers of Japanese and Chinese cloisonne on the east coast.
This wonderful Edo period antique Japanese tobacco box is made of wood and covered with lacquer which is now seriously aged. In the middle of the lid is small sculptured detail. The box has the original cord and horn tip toggle, and still contains tobacco.
Circa 1860's this box is 4.5" x 2.5" x 3" high. It is truly a piece of old ethnographic folk art from Japan's Edo period.
This pair of Japanese handmade long square cut nails are 5" long and appear to have never been used. The nail heads are solid and shaped into a hemisphere. The silver colored decorative metal escutcheons have scalloped edges and markings to represent a flower. The escutcheons are just under 1" in diameter and have a squared center hole which exactly fits the nail shank.
This matched set of Japanese lacquer consists of a 10 inch shallow serving bowl and 5 plates. Each piece has a silver rim and nashiji finish with a decorative motif of bamboo leaves with abalone shell inlay flowers.
