This was a traditional Jacket worn by the Yi woman of marriageable age in Yunnan Province. The background fabric is made from home grown, and home spun cotton which was indigo dyed. The jacket is elaborately decorated with additional bands of woven fabric, silk ribbon and embroidery using cotton thread. The sleeve length comes just below the elbows to allow for the woman to show off her many silver bracelets. This sleeve length is typical of Miao, Yi and Dong Chinese ethnic minority groups. The ornate silver buttons are decorative only and the jacket is worn slightly open. The jacket is now about 65 years old, in very good condition. It is very comfortable to wear, and is 20 inches across the chest, so it would be considered as a medium to large size by US standards. Picture #4 is a similiar Yi jacket worn by my friend San Mei. Although she is Miao minority and from Guizhou, she graciously agreed to model a Yi jacket for me. |
