Symbols in this nicely-framed late Qing or early Repulican embroidery include the peony (wealth and distinction), the Buddhist sign of the endless fish knot, the bat (symbol of good luck and happiness), and the butterfly (a female symbol). The central peony, as well as the key symbols in the corners, shows forbidden stitch.
This exquisite Chinese embroidery is in perfect condition. Motives include peonies, fruit, butterflies, bats, and mushrooms. The central vase is sewn with forbidden stitch. Beautifully framed. Embroidery diameter is 11 3/4". Framed size is 23 3/4" by 24".
The central Chinese character is "shou", longevity. Also sewn into this stunning late Qing embroidery are bats and clouds (both for happiness) and mushrooms, also symbolizing longevity. The diameter of the embroidery is 13.5" and the beautiful frame is 28" square.
Both of these Qing embroideries show children, one with a dragon, symbolic of the male, yang, fertility and the emperor, and the bat, symbol of happiness and good luck. The other shows a child with a butterfly, symbol of the female. The lower areas show water with waves. These are framed with hangers, 10.5" by 16.25". The embroideries are 10" long and 4.75" at the widest.
