Wedgwood Ivanhoe Series, Polychrome Plate – Rebecca repelling the Templar. This Aesthetic Movement transferware plate reflects a scene from Sir Walter Scott's IVANHOE novel. Innovative printing processes and the ability to use inks in brilliant colors were introduced in the early 20th Century. The tile is molded in relief which intensifies the turquoise in those areas where the glaze has pooled. It is the English tradition of deep respect for nature and the two waterbirds are meticulously designed. The birds stand in the water grasses, seemingly alert to possible danger. VICTORIAN AESTHETIC MOVEMENT PLATTER, DEVONSHIRE Pattern, c.1884. DEVONSHIRE has an Anglo-Japanese deep brown transfer pattern with birds and daisies and is a multi-motif pattern. The platter is an unusual elongated octagonal shape. The platter measures 16.25 inches x 12 inches. The marks on the bottom of the plate include the stamping of RIDGWAYS and DEVONSHIRE (the pattern name) as well as Rd. No. 2302 and a printed 29. The trademark quiver and bow are also printed.
