This transferware design features palm or bamboo trees on a small island, with cranes or herons with fish in its beak. A butterfly hovers near the rim. The pattern, PRIMROSE, was introduced BY W.T. Copeland in 1881. The Aesthetic Movement design has a black printed transfer of a stylized central exotic flower radiating in arches like a pinwheel star from the center and decorated with Acanthus leaves all around the edge. This Japanesque platter has stems of bamboo on the left hand side while the major focus is a large branch of pink almond blossoms with the incongruity of young almonds maturing alongside the blossoms. During the early 20th Century, Doulton increased the number of artisans and artists who created new designs, many of them geometrical, but still based on flora and foliage, as well as some Persian influences. The colors tend to be intense and the color combinations have an edge to them.
