This is a stunning and unusual American moulded gesso frame from the 1880s. Probably just preceding the Adirondack period, as I think the leaves and seed pods are a native American plant. AESTHETIC JAPANESQUE TILE w. BROWN TRANSFER ON CREAM CLAY. The design is asymmetrical study in brown and cream, based on the brown transfer underglaze, on cream clay. The desing has stylized blossom branches and clouds. There is wear on the surface but is other wise in good condition. The back of the tile is marked: MAW & CO. BROSELY SALOPIA, with a moulded circle containing BROSELY SALOPIA again. C.1875-1880.
ARTS & CRAFTS AESTHETIC TILE. Low Relief and Monochromatic Botanical Design by J. & J.G. Low, of Chelsea, MASS. The low relief design has a pleasing olive glaze. The plant is probably modelled on a American wild flower. The pooling of the glaze in the crevisses gives a nice contrast between deep to light olive coloring. It is in very good condition, with two small glaze losses, on the center stem and the last leaf on the lower right hand side. Probably made around 1890.
MINTON Aesthetic Tile, Low Relief and Monochromatic Old Gold, featuring Pine Cones, in the Japanese Manner. The tile is in excellent condition. The pine tree branches, the needle leaves and the pine cones themselves are asymmetrically placed on the 6inch square tile. The gold glaze pools slightly in the crevisses of the low relief design, intensifying the contrasts in color between the high relief and flat planes.
