American Aesthetic Movement gilded moulded gesso on a wood frame with a high definition leaf motif. c. 1880s. Probably water gilded, which leaves a long-lasting gold finish.
The frame is 15.5’ x 17.25”. The inner border is 9.25” x 11.25”. It is in excellent condition with no gesso or gilding losses. Please feel free to ask for more photos or other details.

This extremely rare design very strongly reflects Japanese style, with the depiction of dragons and sea monster as well as well as the rolling waves and tentacle-like crests at the tips of the waves. The RUSTIC pattern was first introduced by Burgess & Leigh at the Hill Pottery in 1886. The RUSTIC pattern reflects the English countryside with several planes of perspective which draw the viewer’s eye. The brown transfer design is executed on a cream colored body.
