A GRECO-ROMAN ALABASTER SERAPIS
With thick, wavy locks framing his face, and a full beard and moustache, his head surmounted by a modius. 1st Century B.C./1st Century A.D. 3 1/2 inches high. Intact. Mounted. From a California collection. Serapis was a composite of several Egyptian and Hellenistic deities. He was created by Ptolemy I in an attempt to form a bridge between the Greek and Egyptian population under his rule.
