| An ancient Greek, flat-backed terracotta head of Medusa, with striking facial details and serpent hair. Hellenistic, 3rd/4th Century B.C. 4 inches wide X 3 1/4 inches high. Intact with remains of white slip. Mounted on a lucite frame. From an old NYC collection. In Greek mythology, Medusa was a female monster. Looking at her would turn people to stone. She was beheaded by Perseus, who then used her head as a weapon. He later gave it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield. | ||
