8 1/4” length of distinctive form with diamond section “bodkin” form point made to penetrate mail above a pair of sharp flesh cutting flanges to inflict massive trauma once the armor was breached. Excellent excavated condition with fine original profile except for damage to the edge of the closed seam conical socket. This extraordinary helmet is distinguished by its original finish which is preserved throughout. It was likely produced for service in the 30 Years War then served again in the English Civil War as a great many did. It has been in England for as long as can be determined. English Civil War period. Heavy iron, forged from a single plate with medial ridge terminating in a peak ate the bottom. Broad rounded flared skirt and rolled thickened edges at the arms. Fine 32 7/8” double edged blade engraved with bunched foliage over a cross with a large cabalistic inscription below and maker’s mark to the reverse.
