In the 1960’s we made countless buying trips to New England, ending at Cape Cod. Among our most treasured purchases was this ship’s carpenter’s chest dating to about 1850. The chest is entirely hand made, with square cut nails, 36 1/4” x 16 1/4” x 16” high with one board top with miter inset ends and rounded vertical side posts pierced with rope handles. BY FAMED MUSKET CONTRACTOR. Excellent quality with 6 1/4 tinned blade crisply struck, LAMSON, GOODNOW & CO. S. FALLS WORKS. Two piece bone grips. Good patina with a little surface storage rust to the left side and very slight edge irregularity from use as expected. Lamson Goodnow & Co. of Shelburn Falls Mass. produced 50,000 US M.1861 muskets. They produced cutlery before the war and supplied soldiers mess cutlery from their stock to the government.
