Ring pommel daggers were first used by the Celts and evolved in southern Europe to the form seen here. Its form with a slightly turned down guard is characteristic of the Helvetic League and is particularly associated with the town of Basil. The stiff asymmetrical blade served equally well for slashing and thrusting and would have been very formidable in its period before the evolution of full plate armor. Like most surviving examples, this evidently was a river find.

This elegant weapon was made for wear with armor to attack and armored opponent. In fact, it is a perfect companion for the armor shown on the cover of this catalog. The hilt has a finely forged guard with straight recurved cross guard as used from the 15th century. The grip is shaped in two stages to allow for one or two hand use. In the latter instance, the pommel acts not only as a counterweight, but as part of the grip for the rear hand. The fine blade is recessed within the guard fo ...click for details

This heavy fighting sword, probably Dutch, is an example of a type which evolved after about 1680. Its blade is called a colichemarde, specifically designed to maximize its ability to thrust and parry. The thrusting attack was increasing in popularity, probably due to its ability to attack the organs and colichemarde bladed swords were specifically produced for dueling. The blade is decorated with foliage and mystical animals beneath a cluster of tulips. The hilt, formerly gilt, is decorated ...click for details

The presence of Hungarian swords in the arsenals of the Republic of Venetia dates to the 15th century. Slavonic mercenaries banded together to defend their hosts from invading Turks. The bodyguard of the Doge of Venice was comprised of Schiavone. In flamboyant Turkish costume and armed with their elegant broadswords, schiavonas, they rivaled the winged hussars of their northern neighbor, Poland for flair and ferocity. The schiavona descended directly from the Gothic broadsword and never lost ...click for details

This fine fighting weapon illustrates a distinctively Spanish version of the broadsword. The guard draws its form from the cup hilt rapier and is engraved with a blooming flower on each side of the blade. The blade bears the motto NO ME SAQUES SIN RAZON / NO ME ENBAINES SIN HONOR , “Do not draw me without reason-Do not sheath me without honor” which appears on many Spanish blades of the period. Swords of this type were used throughout the Spanish colonies by military officers and are particul ...click for details

This example represents the left hand dagger in evolutionary form. The blade is deeply grooved and decoratively pierced to optimize strength for its weight. It is a product of the evolution of swordsmanship among Italian fencing masters who led the western world in technique and regard. This form of the swept hilt rapier, in which both sides of the hilt are symmetrical, formed of bars approximating a hemisphere, was popular in Spain and Italy, the northern part of which was under Spanish control. Examples are known with seven or more pairs of bars, but this form, with four bars to each side is more typical. The blade is signed by the noted Toledo smith Pedro Henandez known to have worked C.1610-20. Another sword signed by Pedro Hernandez with hilt of similar form is in the W ...click for details
