In siege warfare, attackers were disadvantaged by position and protective defenses. That necessitated increased bodily protection. As the amount of armor a man was capable of wearing was limited by its weight, the protection was concentrated in the vital areas, the helmet to protect the head and the breastplate to protect the vital organs. This breastplate provided that latter protection. It is especially finely made with thick forward rolled neck and arm borders and a medial ridge peaked ab ...click for details

From a group which appeared on the market about 20 years ago, many, including this one, with the arsenal mark of the Barberini family. The Barberinis supplied the armor for the papal army in the late 16th century, a period fraught with anarchy and bandits and direct attacks on papal territories by Parma. The close association led to Maffeo Barberini becoming Pope Urban VIII. His brother, Taddeo, was made Supreme Commander of the Papal Army. The helmets, were from the papal armory and served ...click for details

This fine helmet is probably the product of a Milanese workshop. The heavy one piece iron skull is large enough to accommodate the internal padding needed for the tilt. The roped comb provides a cushion against a blow or cut. The hinged visor is flanged to seat in the upper bevor which is notched to receive the visor lifting peg. The bevor is cut with nine breath slots on the right but smooth on the left side which is the lance impact side. The lower bevor (chin piece) has a pivoting hinged hasp ...click for details

Finely formed with thick roped turning knuckle base, pivoted securing hook and triple holes for the hinge. The base etched with a broad band of interlocking cabled figures on goldschmeltz ground. The upper edge corrugated for strength with double band of interrupted hound’s tooth decoration. Original liner leathers intact. Excellent throughout. The complete helmet from which this has become detached would be valued in the $60,000 range if such an example was in private hands.

This plackart or reinforcing breast-plate is made to fit over an armor to provide additional protection against firearms. This allowed protection when needed and a lighter more maneuverable armor when it was not in place. A number of such reinforcing breastplates were produced for the Tower of London in the 17th century though surviving examples are rare. See European Armour in the Tower of London, Pl CXXI, c for an similar example and, Pl CXXI, d, for an example as mounted to the armor. Ite ...click for details
