This example epitomizes the morion at its zenith in Northern Italy with its two piece skull surmounted by an exceptionally high elegant roped edge comb. It is etched overall in panels of foliage with a central mounted warrior one side and a display of arms the other. The comb is decorated with a panel bearing a shield and battle axe inscribed IHS. From a well known group identified by Norman as hilt form 85 and conforming bar for bar to that standard with three ranks of alternate pierced panels and bar ovals over a pierced “saucer” shaped base. This fine breast-plate is a product of the Nuremberg armor industry. It was made for a light half armor without tassets. The inside is struck with the mark of the Nuremberg rolling mills which produced the steel plate from which is was made. The vertical texturing of the front is the original finish of the plate as it was delivered. This dagger was made en suite with a swept hilt rapier of equally fine quality. The iron hilt with its straight cross guard and forward ring guard elegantly present the finest fully developed form for these. The blade is recessed at the forte to accommodate the thumb for maximum control. The ricasso is crisply stamped with a makers mark of superimposed hearts both sides.

This elegant sword was made for civilian use in accordance with the evolving fencing styles of the day which originated in Italy. The large well balanced hilt provides protection on both sides with pierced plates. While similar in proportions to the large military rapiers used by cavalry, this example has a slender blade designed for thrusting and the blood duel.
