$6,800.00

This form of this helmet is founded in function and accordingly, resembles its Western European counterparts in fundamentals. The differences, expressions of the Eastern taste, are in the details. Its rolled edge brim wraps around beyond the mid point of the radially fluted skull and slightly overlaps the one piece neck protection. The top is mounted with a conical spike on a radially fluted base and the nasal bar has a broad spade shaped terminal. All elements are embellished with oversized ...click for details

This is a fine example of an English cup hilt rapier in its evolutionary form. The hilt has a deep cup decorated with six pierced concentric panels. Some examples responded to the political unrest leading to the English Civil Wars with decoration which expressed the conviction of the owner, often portraits of Charles and Henrietta. Unlike most, the knuckle bow stands free of the pommel. The blade is imported from Germany as nearly all were, and bears an inscription DE AIALA, spuriously referring ...click for details

This fine rapier is an exact companion to the noted example in the Tower of London Collection, inventory number IX-793, illustrated in Swords and Daggers in the Tower of London, plate 34c, clearly a product of the same workshop and perhaps both made as part of a specific order, matching in all details and measurements. The cup guard and long straight cross guard represent the ultimate fighting form for the period. In contrast to its plain exterior, the lovely interior guarda polvo would be rev ...click for details

The fortress, Aalholm Slot, was built about 1200 AD as a coastal defense to Swedens southern shore on Lollands only natural harbor. The town of Nysted grew to support it and a neighboring Franciscan cloister and flourished under its protection. With the evolution of the Danish monarchy, it became a Royal Castle under Christian II. This example, of fine flamboyant form, is from a distinctly identifiable group, showing superior quality. The deep domed skull has a high broad "white" cr ...click for details

This rapier was produced for personal protection and is intended for use on foot. The hilt is of a rare form (Norman #31). An example in the Wallace Collection, A627, identified as North Italian C.1600, is mounted with a hilt of identical form. The blade is Spanish with the Toledo mark to the ricasso and inscribed *I N T I DOMINI* each side. Northern Italy was ruled by the Spanish Hapsburgs at the time and Spanish blades were used throughout the empire. Accordingly, it is likely that this s ...click for details

Distinct variation with fully developed cup of forged iron as contrasted with the skeletal cups comprised of joined bars most usually encountered. Additionally, the forward portion of the cup rises with the knuckle bow. Norman refers to this as boat form, hilt 91 and few enough examples exist that he must rely on portraits and two excavated hilt elements for information. Of the few actual examples known, it appears that only one, in the Museum of London accords with this example and the Norman p ...click for details

This is an example of a purely English rapier of the English Civil Wars period and the years which led to them. Its boat form guard is decorated with portrait heads including a crowned central caricature of King Charles flanked by Henrietta and facing a particularly grotesque allegorical countenance. Its form is identified by Norman as hilt form 91 which he discusses in its variations. This variation corresponds to the last described and specifically accords with Two with forward quillons pierci ...click for details

This fine sword comes from a group which has been misidentified since the 19th century when collectors called them Sinclair hilt swords in an attempt to link them to the Scottish mercenary Colonel George Sinclair. In fact, it is a broadsword of heavy rapier type with blade of thick diamond section, tapering uniformly through its length which is equally suitable for slashing and thrusting. Its recurved cross guard and large ring guard surrounding a pierced plate and thumb ring opposite. It is rig ...click for details

This dagger was made en suite with a rapier with which it served. In dueling, a number of structured maneuvers utilizing the two together comprised the defense and offense. Primarily used to engage an opponent's blade, the dagger had the capability of delivering a fatal thrust even to an opponent wearing a brigandine. It is the rapiers, particularly dated examples, which provide us with the typology for the daggers. This example may be compared to a rapier by Thomas de Aiala of Toledo in the ...click for details

This extraordinary helmet is distinguished by its original finish which is preserved throughout. It was likely produced for service in the 30 Years War then served again in the English Civil War as a great many did. It has been in England for as long as can be determined. The surface is a uniform brown color as is produced from faded blue suggesting that it was blued overall originally. The material is rolled steel and skull bears the original hammer marks on the exterior, necessary to produce t ...click for details
