This helmet represents the morion in its finest form. It is forged from a single piece with a high elegant roped edge comb and elegantly upswept brim. The base of the skull retains all of its brass rosettes and brass capped rivets which once secured the liner bands as well as the base mounts for the plume holder, now removed. It is decorated overall in panels of foliage on a pelletized ground bordered by strap work. Central panels of putti in various pursuits adorn the skull and crest, both ...click for details

Made without a knuckle bow, this rapier represents a scarce but well documented variation for the period. The pierced and embossed shell guards are decorated with portrait heads of Charles I (1625-49) as was the fashion. The 34 1/4" hollow triangular blade represents an early use of the form. This example is distinguished by retaining nearly all of its original finish to the hilt. Provenance: Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn, Michigan

This is a classic example of a Royalist sword of the English Civil Wars period. The iron hilt is chiseled with portraits representing King Charles and Queen Henrietta Maria. The martyrdom of Charles led to the the practice of calling these swords mortuary swords though that term was probably not used at the time of their service. It is a basket hilt cavalry sword. The blade is German, marked MEFECIT SOLINGEN each side with double cross and orb marks.

This is a further example of the mortuary hilt which gained popularity around the time of the English Civil Wars. It preserves the form of the hilt which is deeply chiseled in somewhat abstracted foliage incorporating flower heads in place of the royal portraits. Their absence does not necessarily indicate a Parliamentarian owner, but allowed the owner to pass comfortable among supporters of both sides. As with nearly all of these, the blade is German and bears the Passau wolf mark inlaid in cop ...click for details

C.1540 In the first half of the 16th century, the Italian runka retained the simple elegance of its Gothic roots. Its large, uniformly tapered diamond section fore spike is of virtually indistinguishable form and proportions from the broadsword blades of the day and it could be used in much the same way, but at length. The large crescent base lugs, sharpened on both edges, were equally menacing and capable of unseating a mounted adversary. If he should be downed, the lugs could easily cut the le ...click for details

This is a further example of the crab claw rapier representing an extreme of the form. The hilt is finely detailed with vertical ribs on the guard echoing the fluting of the pommel. The blade is in three stages with rounded hexagonal ricasso stepped to a flattened diamond section with a further step reducing the section slightly. Its relatively light weight makes this a very effective weapon in the hands of an experienced swordsman. GC.116

This example is based in form on the previous two, but utilizes a hilt simplified and undecorated. The radially fluted guard supports a hilt basket of swelled medial bars. It evidently was part of a contract, another example from which is in the collection of the Tower of London, illustrated in Swords and Daggers in the Tower of London, plate 48b. The civil unrest and subsequent Civil Wars in England resulted in the production of thousands of swords in the 1640s. ...click for details

This elegant sword with its slightly oval ring guard and oval inner guard dates to the second quarter of the 17th century. It would have been used by a cavalryman in armor and is made to be effective against armor. It retains considerable original polish to the blade and remains in quite crisp condition throughout. In the 17th century, Sweden was a major European power waging war against Poland and Denmark and conquering Livonia, Ingermanland (part of Russia), Karelia, Pomerania, and southern pr ...click for details

The evolution of the ranseur or runka can be traced directly to the Gothic lugged spear and indeed it was fully developed in this form in the Gothic period. Like the halberd, it is an infantry weapon which gives a foot soldier the capability of effectively attacking an armored horseman with its long spear point and low angle of attack. The sharp base lugs can cut the reins or penetrate between the armor plates. A skilled user could gain purchase on the armor as the adversary approached while ...click for details
