Thousands of castles and tens of thousands of villages were destroyed. In the forefront of siege warfare were the sappers whose job it was to undermine and destroy fortifications, primarily castle and city walls. They were attacked directly as well as at distance by musket fire and a variety of projectiles. This helmet served a sapper of the ...click for details

The axe was the most common method of execution by decapitation in Europe through the 17th century after which it was replaced by the sword. It was considered the most humane method and many historic figures including Mary Queen of Scots, and Charles I were beheaded by axe. Sir Thomas More was sentenced to be “hanged, drawn and quartered” but his sentence was commuted to execution by axe. On the block, he is reported to tell the executioner that his beard was completely innocent of any crime ...click for details

This halberd was of a form which gained favor in Italy in the late 16th century. It was designed as a very effective fighting weapon responding to the changing tactics of the day. It is slightly lighter and more streamlined than its predecessors increasing agility and making it more effective for thrusting. The iron cheek straps protected the haft from cutting. This halberd is similar to #2 of this catalog. They are the products of two different makers, probably unknown to each other. Thei ...click for details

This is a good example of a type of breastplate which took its form from current fashion. It is of fine peascod form with a strong overhanging central ridge. That feature mimics the padded doublets which were stylish in the late 16th century. It is of relatively light weight, from Northern Italy, probably used in a guard unit. At the time, powerful nobles, clergy and business men maintained personal guard units to protect them and their possessions as well as deter mischief by show of force. ...click for details

In siege warfare, attackers were disadvantaged by position and protective defenses. That necessitated increased bodily protection. As the amount of armor a man was capable of wearing was limited by its weight, the protection was concentrated in the vital areas, the helmet to protect the head and the breastplate to protect the vital organs. This breastplate provided that latter protection. It is especially finely made with thick forward rolled neck and arm borders and a medial ridge peaked above ...click for details
