| This sword related to a group of which there are at least five examples recorded, primarily in paintings. Geographically, they span from southern Germany, through Switzerland and Italy strongly suggesting an Alpine origin for this example. In all respects, it represents a true transition form the broadswords of the first half of the century. The guard is of a form recorded as C1520-40’s. The pommel is made without a foot as is used with the “hock bottle” grip. The blade is etched with typical 16th century German sun, star, and man in the moon motifs. Blade length: 37” cf., The Rapier and Smallsword, Norman, p.100, Hilt 37. GC.075 | ||
