A SCOTTISH BASKET HILT BACK SWORD OF BREADALBANE TYPE. LATE 18TH CENTURY.

From a distinct group of cavalry sword which armed regiments organized under the Campbells of Breadalbane. The blade etched first quarter with scrolling foliage, thistle and lattice motifs. Basket weave form hilt with large central hand engraved badge of a crowned thistle in a heart. The Campbells were loyal to the crown through the Scottish Rebellion and formed several regiments providing troops to serve King George III in the years following. This example is distinguished by its excellent preservation.
