| The presence of Hungarian swords in the arsenals of the Republic of Venetia dates to the 15th century. Slavonic mercenaries banded together to defend their hosts from invading Turks. The bodyguard of the Doge of Venice was comprised of Schiavone. In flamboyant Turkish costume and armed with their elegant broadswords, schiavonas, they rivaled the winged hussars of their northern neighbor, Poland for flair and ferocity. The schiavona descended directly from the Gothic broadsword and never lost its uniquely Slavonic form through the period of evolution into the 18th century despite being made in Venice. As such, they represent a strong descendant branch from an exceedingly rare origin. Stylistically magnificent, their hereditary double identity is further enhanced by their distinction in battle. Their dating was long a matter of speculation, now clarified and best explained in European Weapons and Armor by R. Ewart Oakeschott who identifies this example as type 2. Blade length: 34 1/4” | ||
