This fine sword comes from a group which has been misidentified since the 19th century when collectors called them Sinclair hilt swords in an attempt to link them to the Scottish mercenary Colonel George Sinclair. In fact, it is a broadsword of heavy rapier type with blade of thick diamond section, tapering uniformly through its length which is equally suitable for slashing and thrusting. Its recurved cross guard and large ring guard surrounding a pierced plate and thumb ring opposite. It is rightly placed with the large military swords which were used by mounted troops in the early years of the Thirty Years War.
