Collection of 21 original woodblock prints by Haku Maki (1924-2000), in a complete first edition, deluxe printing of “Festive Wine: Ancient Japanese Poems from the Kinkafu”, 16/150, 1969. This set is from the famous Juda Collection of sosaku hanga prints.
Each print measures approximately 12 3/8 x 9 1/2 inches, plus margins, and is pencil signed, titled and numbered 16/150.
The prints are displayed in the book under paper mats, which cover the margins, since we could not easily scan the prints with the margins without risking damage to the mats.
The book was translated into English, with an introduction, essay and commentaries by Noah Brannen and William Elliot. Published by Walker/Weatherhill: New York & Tokyo. The red background frontispiece, shown in the upper left of the group photo, was only included in the first edition of this set.
It is in very good condition, and comes with the original wooden slipcase, shown in the bottom left corner of the group scan.

Original Japanese woodblock print, c. 1800, depicting an amorous couple. The print is slightly faded, with some faint soiling and rubbing. The entire sheet measures 10 x 14 3/4 inches. As is the case with many prints of this genre, it is not signed.
This print is from the genre generally called “shunga”, also known as “images of spring”. The imagery of shunga prints varies from graphic rendezvous between courtesans and clients to subtle glimpses of tender embraces between characters based on Japanese literature. Shunga were intended to be enjoyed as entertainment for both men and women and have had various uses, including as sexual manuals and even instructions on hygiene.
