Genuine, first state Japanese woodblock print by Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), depicting The Banquet at the Koshida Palace, 1886, from the series New Selection of Eastern Brocade Pictures. This print is described at No. 55.18 in Beauty and Violence: Japanese prints by Yoshitoshi, by Eric van den Ing and Robert Schaap (1992), who indicate that the series depicts highlights from various kabuki plays. The authors further indicate that the first state
prints from this series can be discerned by the presence of a three-color cartouche.
The print is a diptych, consisting of two panels that go together to make a single design. Each sheet measures approximately 13
¾ by 9 inches, plus margins. The two sheets are not attached, nor are they backed. The colors on the print are quite fresh, and
there are many deluxe features including lacquer highlights and extensive embossing. However, there is some light soiling and
transfer stains.

Pencil signed woodblock print titled Longévité Corée-Moppo (Longetivity, Moppo, Korea), 347/350, published November 28, 1948. It is pencil signed and bears the Peach
seal. This design is illustrated at plate 100 of Miles, Richard, The Prints of Paul Jacoulet, 1982. The image measures approximately 15 ½ by 11 ¾ inches, plus full margins. What appears to be a nick in the bottom margin on the right was actually done intentionally at the time of printing to assist in the alignment of the wood blocks, and is indicative of untrimmed margins.
This print is in excellent condition, except for some very minor creasing in the margin and a small area of mica loss in the upper garment (which we could not make visible in a scan). The colors are very fresh and intense, and there is lovely gauffrage work in his hat and mica in the garment. This print came from a collection that had never been matted or framed!

Original first edition, brush signed Japanese woodblock print by Ito Shinsui (1898-1972), titled Desert of Mt. Mihara, 1938, from the series Twelve Sights of Oshima Island. This design was published by Watanabe Color Print Co., and bears a circular publisher's seal in the lower left corner. It is illustrated in the seminal reference book for the artist, Ito Shinsui: All the Woodblock Prints, at plate 83.
According to the publisher, the prints from the Twelve Sights of Oshima Island series, as they were hand signed and sealed by Shinsui, rather than printed in the block. There was only one printing of the 12 designs from the series; 200 copies of each. Apparently, Shozaburo Watanabe used to send Shinsui about 20 to 30 copies of each design to sign, as needed.
The image measures approximately 10 ¼ by 15 ½ inches, plus full margins. The print is in very good condition, with wonderfully fresh colors, although there is some creasing in the top margin, and at the corners.
