Wonderful Paul
Jacoulet woodblock. It is titled Le Genie
sans Noms. Coree (The Unkown
Genius. Korea), published January 15,
1953. It is pencil signed and bears the
Peony seal on the front and an elaborate PJ seal on the reverse. This design is illustrated at plate
127 of Miles, Richard, The Prints of Paul Jacoulet, 1982. The image measures approximately
15 ½ by 11 ¾ inches, plus full margins. What appears to be a nick in the bottom margin on the
right was actually done intentionally at the time of printing to assist in the alignment of the wood
blocks, and is indicative of untrimmed margins.
This print is in excellent condition and the colors are very fresh and intense. It came from a
collection that had never been matted or framed!

Four panel (quadraptych) Japanese woodblock print by Konishi Hirosada (fl. 1820-1860). It depicts a scene from a Kabuki drama, and what makes it particularly interesting is that two of the actors have tattooes.
This print has very good color. The two center sheets are attached, while the two outer sheets are not. The design is out of an album, and, accordingly, has the typically creasing and folding along the vertical edges, as well as some staining and glue residue. It is not backed. The fully assembled image measures approximately 9 5/8 by 27 3/8 inches.

First edition
Japanese woodblock print by Kawase
Hasui (1883-1957), titled Gionbashi
Bridge, Asakusa, from the series
Selection of Scenes of Japan, 1924. This
design is illustrated at plate 113 of Kawase Hasui Mokuhangashu (Kawase Hasui Catalogue
of Woodblock Prints), Narazaki, Muneshige, ed., (Tokyo: Kodansha & Mainichi Shinbun,
1979). It is part of a series of 36 aiban format prints that were published by Watanable Color
Print Co. between 1922 and 1926 (Narazaki plates 82 -117). While this design bears a circular
Watanabe seal in the lower right corner of the image, savvy Hasui collectors know that the
post-earthquake designs from this series are an exception to the general rule of determining the
state of post-earthquake/pre-war designs by the presence of a publisher's cartouche in the
margin.
This print is has wonderfully fresh colors and is in very good condition, with no condition issues
to note, aside from some faint toning reverse and thinning on the top reverse corners. The image
measures approximately 11 by 8 1/8 inches, plus margins.
