Original 18th century Japanese woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu (1724-1770), depicting an interruption of an amorous liaison. The impression and color of this print are excellent. There is a faint centerfold, some light toning at the front top edge and on the reverse, and some minor wrinkling at upper left edge of the print. The entire sheet measures 7 3/8 x 9 7/8 inches.
This print is from the genre generally called “shunga”, also known as “images of spring”. The imagery of shunga prints varies from graphic rendezvous between courtesans and clients to subtle glimpses of tender embraces between characters based on Japanese literature. Shunga were intended to be enjoyed as entertainment for both men and women and have had various uses, including as sexual manuals and even instructions on hygiene.
