First edition
Japanese woodblock print by Kawase
Hasui (1883-1957), titled Gionbashi
Bridge, Asakusa, from the series
Selection of Scenes of Japan, 1924. This
design is illustrated at plate 113 of Kawase Hasui Mokuhangashu (Kawase Hasui Catalogue
of Woodblock Prints), Narazaki, Muneshige, ed., (Tokyo: Kodansha & Mainichi Shinbun,
1979). It is part of a series of 36 aiban format prints that were published by Watanable Color
Print Co. between 1922 and 1926 (Narazaki plates 82 -117). While this design bears a circular
Watanabe seal in the lower right corner of the image, savvy Hasui collectors know that the
post-earthquake designs from this series are an exception to the general rule of determining the
state of post-earthquake/pre-war designs by the presence of a publisher's cartouche in the
margin.
This print is has wonderfully fresh colors and is in very good condition, with no condition issues
to note, aside from some faint toning reverse and thinning on the top reverse corners. The image
measures approximately 11 by 8 1/8 inches, plus margins.

Paul Jacoulet woodblock. It is titled Retour D'un Banquet. Coree, Seoul (After the Banquet. Seoul, Korea),
published December 20, 1951. It is pencil signed and bears the Owl seal on the front and an elaborate PJ seal on the reverse. This design is
illustrated at plate 119 of Miles, Richard, The Prints of Paul Jacoulet, 1982. The image measures approximately 11 ¾ by 15 ½ inches, plus
full margins. What appears to be a nick in the bottom margin on the right was actually done intentionally at the time of printing to assist in the
alignment of the wood blocks, and is indicative of untrimmed margins.
This print is in excellent condition, aside from a small cluster of foxing on the reverse, showing through to the front just to the left of the hat, and another showing through on the white garment,
approximately where his shins would be underneath. The colors are very fresh and intense. Silver leaf and metallic are used on the screen and marriage robe and bronze metallic on the hat and
screen. This print came from a collection that had never been matted or framed!

Wonderful and important Japanese woodblock print by sosaku hanga school master Jun'ichiro Sekino (1914-1988), titled
Kichiemon Nakamura, numbered 1/50. Next to the edition notation in the bottom margin is IImé etat, which is French for second printing. According to "Jun'ichiro Sekino: The Prints", 1994 (Sekino, Katsuko, ed.), where this design is illustrated at plate no. 75, this image was first
printed in 1947. The 1947 edition is limited to 30, and, as was typical of the artist during the early 1950s, when an edition sold out, he would
print it again in a larger edition size, in this case an edition of 50, and so designate the second edition by with the term IImé etat. Since very few
of the images from the first edition are still extant, the IImé etat impressions of this design are highly desirable and collectible.
The print is in very good condition with excellent color. There is tape residue on the outer edge of the top reverse margin and a tear in the upper left margin, near the corner. The image measures
approximately 21 7/8 by 17 7/8 inches, plus margins.
Shipping surcharge, due to size.
