Original Japanese woodblock print by Tsuruya Kokei (b. 1945), titled Ichimura Uzaemon XVII as Senoo Juro in Sanemori Monogatari, 1995. It is number 65 from a limited edition of 90, and is Design 7 in this Bust Portraits X Series. The image is illustrated at plate 156 of Tsuruya Kokei: The Complete Woodblock Prints (1978-2000). Tsuruya Kokei was the official portrait artist at the Kabuki-za Theater, Ginza, Tokyo, until his retirement last year. Originally, his prints were sold to theater patrons in the lobby, and later were also available by subscription through the Kokei Kai, a membership-only subscription society formed to make his prints available to those living too far away to visit the Kabuki-za. This print is in excellent condition, still in its original packaging. According to the Kokei catalogue referred to above, this design is printed on tosa ganpi paper, made in Kochi Prefecture, and printed from blocks made of magnolia obovata wood. The image measures 15 ˝ by 10 inches, plus margins. A Japanese “certificate of authenticity”, will also be sent with the print. |
