Original, limited edition Japanese woodblock print by Ito Shinsui (1898-1972), titled A Charcoal Footwarmer, 1929 from The Second Series of Modern Beauties. It is numbered 211/250 in Japanese on the reverse. It was published by the Watanabe Color Print Co., and bears the publisher's circular cartouche at the left edge of the print, as well as the publisher's limited edition seal on the reverse (both of these are shown in the detail scan. This design is illustrated at plate 64 in Ito Shinsui: All the Woodblock Prints, by Tadasu Watanabe. Shinsui, along with Kotondo and Hashiguchi Goyo, is one of the leading bijin-ga (beautiful women) artists of the shin hanga school. This print is evenly faded, although there are still remnants of pink pigments in her lips. The margins have been trimmed, and it is toned from the reverse, showing through to the front. A scan of the entire reverse is included. There are some losses to the mica background, and a spot of foxing. The dimensions of the print are approximately 16 by 10 1/4 inches. |
