Paul Jacoulet woodblock. It is titled Retour D'un Banquet. Coree, Seoul (After the Banquet. Seoul, Korea),
published December 20, 1951. It is pencil signed and bears the Owl seal on the front and an elaborate PJ seal on the reverse. This design is
illustrated at plate 119 of Miles, Richard, The Prints of Paul Jacoulet, 1982. The image measures approximately 11 ¾ by 15 ½ inches, plus
full margins. What appears to be a nick in the bottom margin on the right was actually done intentionally at the time of printing to assist in the
alignment of the wood blocks, and is indicative of untrimmed margins.
This print is in excellent condition, aside from a small cluster of foxing on the reverse, showing through to the front just to the left of the hat, and another showing through on the white garment, approximately where his shins would be underneath. The colors are very fresh and intense. Silver leaf and metallic are used on the screen and marriage robe and bronze metallic on the hat and screen. This print came from a collection that had never been matted or framed! |
