First edition Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), titled Zozoji Temple in the
Snow, from the series Twenty Scenes of Tokyo, 1925. Arguably Hasui's most popular design, it is illustrated at plate 147 of Kawase
Hasui Mokuhangashu (Kawase Hasui Catalogue of Woodblock Prints), Narazaki, Muneshige, ed., (Tokyo: Kodansha & Mainichi
Shinbun, 1979). There is an A Watanabe seal in the lower right margin, signifying that this is a first edition printing of the design. For more information about dating Watanabe prints by the type of publisher's seal used see http://floatingworld.com/watanabeseals.html. This print is has wonderfully fresh colors and is in very good condition, aside from some faint toning on the reverse and residue/thinning from a prior mount in top reverse margin. The image measures approximately 14 1/4 by 9 3/8 inches, plus margins. |
