A stained boxwood sashi netsuke of a grimacing oni, one of Japan’s often- portrayed folkloric figures, pounding mochi in its cauldron, his sharp claws firmly grasping the sides. The artist chiseled and molded the creature’s musculature with great attention to anatomical detail, achieving a heightened, naturalistic effect. Signature plaque of Keimin on base.( The piece shows slight wear - please see photographs), but does not distract from its superior quality and craftsmanship.)

A wonderful automatized ivory okimono of the legend of ill-fated Anchin, a Buddhist monk, who unluckily falls victim to Kiyohime’s obsessive passion. The monk’s unwillingness to succumb to her advances turned Kiyohime into a vengeful dragon trapping Anchin under a temple bell. A charming, small Satsuma sake cup rendered in rich enameled colors. Its exterior depicts continuous imagery of a lakeside village scene with huts, pine and dramatic waterfalls. Within, an amusing party of macaques in black, brown and white coats are engaged in social activities - grooming, wrestling and eating. Minute detailing and whimsicality characterize this fabulous sake cup. Very good condition, with only minor wear to the gilt along the rim. Artist gilt signature plaque on base.

A round Hirado porcelain plate with two auspicious carp on a pristine white ground. One carp rendered in fine cobalt detailing, the other in white moriage with each scale well-defined. A rare, blue-and-white-enameled Imari porcelain plate sculpted as double fish—the imagery associated with conjugal felicity. The plate is designed with sprays of pine, cherry blossoms and chrysanthemums in under-glaze cobalt on a white ground. The mouth, fins and eyes molded in low relief for added effect. On the reverse, blue-enameled seaweed and clams are rendered in an abstract design. This fine double- fish plate is in excellent condition with no damage or restoration.

This is a magnificent pair of silver bottle-shaped vases with foliated rims and partly-hammered bodies. On each vase, a moriage three-clawed dragon writhes across the surface as flames emanate from its body. The dragon’s fierce expression is a manifestation both of wisdom and power—two attributes associated to the emperor. Noted as a crafty creature that outwits the monkey in the “Tale of the Monkey and the Crab”, the crab is often depicted in Japanese art with meticulous anatomical detailing. This jizai okimono illustrates this artistic approach with its modeled carapace and chiseled nether side.
