A stained boxwood sashi netsuke of a grimacing oni, one of Japan’s often- portrayed folkloric figures, pounding mochi in its cauldron, his sharp claws firmly grasping the sides. The artist chiseled and molded the creature’s musculature with great attention to anatomical detail, achieving a heightened, naturalistic effect. A wonderful automatized ivory okimono of the legend of ill-fated Anchin, a Buddhist monk, who unluckily falls victim to Kiyohime’s obsessive passion. The monk’s unwillingness to succumb to her advances turned Kiyohime into a vengeful dragon trapping Anchin under a temple bell. Atop the bell, demon-like Kiyohime torments Anchin by striking the bell with a mallet. Anchin’s revolving face in this sculpture depicts five faces of anguish. A charming, small Satsuma sake cup rendered in rich enameled colors. Its exterior depicts continuous imagery of a lakeside village scene with huts, pine and dramatic waterfalls. Within, an amusing party of macaques in black, brown and white coats are engaged in social activities - grooming, wrestling and eating. A small yet ingeniously sculpted silver bowl on pedestal base. Its body is formed by moriage iris petals that curl at the ends, their centers stippled, all on a partly-hammered ground. This unique iris bowl is the work of the famous Kuhn & Komor studio, renowned silversmiths with studios in Yokohama and Hong Kong. This is a magnificent pair of silver bottle-shaped vases with foliated rims and partly-hammered bodies. On each vase, a moriage three-clawed dragon writhes across the surface as flames emanate from its body. The dragon’s fierce expression is a manifestation both of wisdom and power—two attributes associated to the emperor.
