Here is a wonderful Hirado porcelain study of a Buddhist temple tiger. Seated with head turned upwards, the tiger wears a fierce expression with large, chiseled eyes and its mouth slightly open to reveal two sharp fangs. The stripes along the tiger's muscular body are strongly modeled emphasizing his potency - from its head to its coiled tail. A lively arrangement of fan-shaped cartouches decorate the exterior with sumptuous textile patterns and lush floral scenes in gosu, iron red enamel and gilt. Applied and finely sculpted song birds perched on bamboo stalks, face each other on the two vases, each gazing at the marvelously carved insects worked in relief above and below. This is a small tobacco pouch of rectangular form with ivory ojime formed as a tortoise shell, the attached ivory netsuke carved as a clam shell. This is a luxurious five-case, gold-lacquered inro depicting a grove of foliage and flowers in gold and silver takamaki-e on a gold kinji ground. The foliage is naturalistically rendered with kirikane details, the interiors executed in rich amber-colored nashiji. A coral ojime keeps the woven silk string in place. This inro is in very good condition with the raised signature of Kogyoku Sai on the base. 19th Century, Japan
