A bronze vase naturalistically modeled as a bamboo culm by the Meiji Period metalwork master, Kyoto-based artist Jomi Eisuke. Jomi was known for his seamlessly hand-beaten copper technique and for fine, meticulous relief work. The artist went through great lengths to depict the nuances of the grass, as seen in the carved texture of the surface, nodes and fleshy base. An oval sentoku tsuba with metal fukurin (rim cover)overlaid in silver, gold, shakudo and copper. The setting for the front of the tsuba is a mysterious nocturnal scene of a fisherman with two cormorants by the river’s edge. The practice of using cormorants to catch small river fish dates to the Nara Period when the fisherman would tie the bird’s neck with rope to prevent the bird from swallowing the fish. A single-case wood inro in rich brown and gold lacquers with attached ivory manju netsuke of a sea dragon. (In allegorical style, the inro depicts the extraordinary story of ill-fated Anchin, the Buddhist monk, who suffers under Kiyohime’s obsessive passion. The monk’s unwillingness to succumb to her advances turned kiyohime into a vengeful dragon trapping Anchin under the temple bell. A marvelously-woven bamboo pendant basket formed as a cicada. Woven in a variety of intricate techniques, its body, wings and legs naturalistically designed, this basket, complete with copper otoshi, can stand on a level surface or hang from the wall. This ingenious ikebana basket is in excellent condition with no breaks, loss or restoration. Includes linen cover and owner's wood box inscribed "Cicada basket" (semi-kago).

The genius of the great Imperial ceramicist, Seifu Yohei, is
immediately visible in this
studio porcelain mizusashi of understated beauty. Its body is subtly enameled with delicate moriage renderings of a conch
shell, clam shells and water reeds on a soft, gradated blue ground.
The Seifu Yohei incised signature is on the base. This porcelain
mizusashi is in excellent condition with only minor wear on the lid
consistent with age and use.

An Imari double -fish plate of vitreous porcelain rendered in cobalt
blue enamel with over-the-glaze iron red and gilt detailing. Three
large cartouches with images of peony, sakura and wisteria emphasize
its
beauty, the modeled accents on the fins, eyes and tail providing a
three-dimensional quality. (The double- fish motif is associated with
marital
bliss.) This Imari plate is in marvelous condition with minor wear
