This is a boxwood okimono formed as a toad. The small sculpture exhibits extensive carving with careful attention to the toad's musculature and inlaid-horn eyes. The signature of the master, Masanao, is carved on the base. This okimono is in excellent condition with no cracks or restoration. Length: 3.5" Meiji Period, Japan

An expressive 19th Century ivory okimono of an inebriated man wearing a tengu mask upon his head, a boy and dog at his feet. The artist's life-like carving expresses the bewildered state of the man as he balances on one foot while carrying on his shoulder a large double gourd, the boy stretching a helping hand. This is a brilliant silver, shakudo and gilt rectangular box on four free-form feet. On its shakudo lid two geese stand among gilt bamboo while a third preens itself closeby. Worked in silver and gilt on a rich shakudo ground, the scene is executed in takazogan (high relief) with fine incised details. A splendid miniature covered Satsuma teapot on four chidori-shaped feet, its finial fashioned in gilt as a chidori. On the body, lappets in rich jewel-like enamels frame brilliantly enameled flowers with accents in gilt. The handle and spout exhibit fine gilt scrollwork. The Kinkozan studio mark is on the base. This is a rare and important two-piece pottery censer in the form of a Buddhist lion standing on four robust legs. The lid (the creature's head) and the powerful body are naturalistically modeled with a flame-like mane and tail - the entirety, richly gilt. Here is a rare wood and copper smoking chest of square form with three drawers and copper liner. The body is carved burlwood, while the metal mounts for the tobacco pipe and pulls are crafted in copper.
