A marvelous Satsuma high-shouldered vase of slim form dramatically tapered by the Master. The main panel illustrates the Hina Matsuri - children and participants surrounding an elaborate doll display prepared for the joyous festivities. Iris in delicate hues rise from the foot, while a collar of kiku in gilt and colors embraces the shoulder. Yabu Meizan gilt signature cartouche on base. A wood netsuke finely carved to form a gourd, a rat clambering upon its surface. The naturalistically carved rat with marvelously modeled tail, is ready to capture the small ivory worm within the gourd. The netsuke artist cleverly carved the worm hole simulating a surface broken by the worm as it seeks its prey within the gourd. This whimsical netsuke is in excellent condition with neither damage nor restoration. 19th Century, Japan

This is a Koto Period tanto in full koshirae with soft metal fittings and glossy black-lacquered saya, its handle wrapped in slate- blue silk cords. The small, mokko-shaped shakudo tsuba is overlaid with gilt spays of grass and plum blossoms. In similar fashion, the fuchi kashira are also overlaid with gold to create images of huts by a meandering stream and grove of kiku; iron menuki sculpted as foliage with gilt details. An excellent Yokohama silver flask of ovoid form modeled with a writhing dragon on a partly-hammered ground. Visually powerful, each hand-chiseled detail contributes to the overall energy and realism of the dragon. Unlike its British counterpart, Japanese pure silver is 950 in silver content—higher than Sterling. A charming ivory okimono of an energetic shojo portrayed here in reference to the Noh play “Shojo Midare”. In a state of drunken merriment, the shojo is caught mid action as he dances upon the cover of a sake barrel, fan in hand and sake ladle over his shoulders. Wonderful modeling and chiseled work characterize this figure.
