A unique patinated bronze paper holder formed as the grimacing mask of the Noh theater character, Hannya. This expressive mask is carved and incised with accents in gilt and enamel. Silver signature plaque, Ippo sai, on the front. This paper holder will be a bold statement for use in your office or study. Excellent condition with only minor rubbing to the horns, commensurate with age and use.

A wood -carved and gold-lacquered netsuke of Hyottoko, the salt blower.
With
his face characteristically contorted, this well-known figure is about to perform
his act. (Netsuke subjects range from gods, demons, legends, animals and also
colorful personages, like the salt blower, the latter, from daily life.
Signed by the master mask netsukeshi, Deme Uman, listed in Bushell
book as a
noted Tokyo artist, family pupil of the famous Deme mask carvers.

Exceptional composition and intricate carving characterize this fine
example of the beloved junishi theme (twelve animals of the zodiac).
Represented here, in amicable co-existence, are the rat, ox, tiger,
rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, monkey, dog, boar, cockerel and goat.
Each animal is delicately modeled, faces wonderfully wrought. This
netsuke is in excellent condition with no problems. Signature plaque
reads Chokyusai (Nagahisa), featured in the Meinertzhagen Index, pg.
31.
