A dramatic silver and cloisonné pedestal vase with slim neck and lobed body. Luxuriant peonies in rich enamels encircle the vase in high relief, contrasting with the delicate enamel work at the neck and foot. Peonies, symbols of spring season, are venerated flowers in Chinese and Japanese art, often associated with good fortune and erotic love. A Shoami School iron tsuba with silver detailing, sukashi-style, with gilt koi leaping through waves and spume. In Japanese symbolism, the carp (koi) is portrayed swimming upwards, cresting over foamy waters or against the currents of a waterfall. An unusual woven bronze wall pocket in the form of a dragonfly, conceived for ikebana use in the tea ceremony. Its tapered body is woven with fine strands of copper-patinated bronze in matte plaiting, the wings reticulated and attached by a mesh of swirling wire. A charming stoneware vase of double gourd form rendered with a mottled cobalt glaze, characteristic for this potter. Spanning the surface, an oni in full trousers reaches out for his dinner, a naïve snail. The oni’s eyes signal his intent…one can only imagine the outcome. A pair of earthenware Manchurian cranes, modeled and decorated naturalistically, each feather carefully delineated. Studied closely by the artist, his choice of vivid red, brown and black enamels add to their “alive” quality. A striking iron- forged face mask in Somen style with attached doe-skin shikoro (neck guard) woven in beige silk with red leather rivets. The face, with prominent eyebrows in a scowl and mouth turned upward in a grimace, highlights the exaggerated nose and ears, all forged separately and attached with ornate rivets.
