A splendid stoneware vase of ovoid form and everted lip. On its textured body, two baby cranelets rest upon a rich, tenmoko glaze, defining the scene. The baby cranes' fluffy plumage, not yet mature, is enameled in low relief, their eyes, legs and beaks detailed in gilt. An outstanding stoneware vase of baluster shape with a formation of geese encircling its delicate beige ground. Heightened by the use of a subtle white slip, the geese, depicted through fine abstract brushwork, appear to glide through the still waters, leaving behind gentle ripples. MAKUZU KOZAN signature on the base with tomobako. The vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Height: 8.5" Meiji Period, Japan
