An exquisite gold and black lacquer natsume with two long-armed gibbons nestled among cascading branches of a mature tree, its interiors in black lacquer with sprinkled gold. The saru, or monkey, a beloved creature often found in Japanese legend and folklore frequently is rendered by the Japanese artist engaged in humanistic and humorous pursuits. A Japanese silver okimono of Daikoku, one of the Seven Gods of Good Luck, seated on two bales of rice with his magic mallet in hand and treasure sack over his back. The god of prosperity is carefully chiseled to denote his noble yet benign appearance. Daikoku is in excellent condition with no damage. The bamboo motif continues along the stippled body with stalks of bamboo modeled in low relief, dramatic leaves sprouting from its stem. This is a charming boxwood netsuke of two seated rabbits facing opposite directions, one with its paw on a persimmon branch.Their bodies are delicately modeled, the fine, incised work simulating the creatures' furry coats. Their eyes are inlaid with mother-of-pearl and the bottom of the piece is brilliantly carved to indicate their tails and the soles of their feet in the most naturalistic manner.
