An overlapping bi-form tebako (cosmetic box) designed in hiramaki-e and togadashi. Autumnal imagery with mountains, streams, maple, pine and luxurious foliage adorns the exterior and sides, dense nashiji the interior and underside. Silver mounts and tomobako. Provenance: Signed on tomobako lid: "Gift by Empress at Hayama Goyotei (summer house), Taisho 6, March 3, 1918." This gold maki-e tebako is in good condition. This is a charming soft-metal kogo formed as three clam shells. The large silver clam shell and two smaller clam shells of the group are fully modeled in gilt and shakudo,their exteriors naturalistically chiseled with wave-like grooves. The brilliant silver interiors, similarly modeled. Within the cover, incised square-mesh and pine mons can be found. This beautiful gem of a kogo shows a few signs of wear consistent with age. The body is woven with fine strands of bamboo utilizing various plaiting techniques, its form reminiscent of usubata bronzes. A six-sided ikebana basket of unusual form woven entirely with open-work hexagonal plaiting. The lacquered bamboo strands are incredibly thin and delicate. Insect stitching keeps the rim and base securely in place. Executed by the renowned bamboo master Chikuunsai II, his incised signature found on the base. This basket is excellent condition.
