Here is a wonderfully executed ikebana basket on a square base, its intricately wrapped handle attached to a wide openwork gallery. The body is woven with fine strands of bamboo utilizing various plaiting techniques, its form reminiscent of usubata bronzes. A six-sided ikebana basket of unusual form woven entirely with open-work hexagonal plaiting. The lacquered bamboo strands are incredibly thin and delicate. Insect stitching keeps the rim and base securely in place. Executed by the renowned bamboo master Chikuunsai II, his incised signature found on the base. This basket is excellent condition. This is an ingeniously crafted ikebana basket formed as a fishing boat, its body intricately woven with fine bamboo strands interspersed with sections of rootwood. Bamboo reeds worked for the bow and stern, and twisted bamboo applied to either side of the mat-plaited deck provide additional support and aesthetic charm. On four pod feet and topped with an arched double reed handle with symmetrical insect stitching, its lightly -colored bamboo slats worked in a swirling design connote moving water, the effect resulting from tight plaiting left to right.
