A pair of bronze, copper-patinated hibachi (braziers) of modified globular form. With extensive incised detailing of stylized peony scroll work on the bodies, the pieces have dramatic handles formed as bats, their opened wings executed in shakudo. (Bats form part of the cultural and aesthetic repertoire of East Asia and are associated with good fortune and happiness.) A globular and tripodic Satsuma incense burner designed in rich gosu blue, and iron red and green enamels with generous gilt detailing. Its collar, decorated with a leafy motif on an iron red ground, encircles the richly gilt body inter- sperced with an overall quatrefoil design in cobalt blue. A six-sided ikebana basket of unusual form woven entirely with open-work hexagonal plaiting. The lacquered bamboo strands are incredibly thin and delicate.
