A dazzling porcelain vase of globular form decorated with sculptural leafy handles. Branches of delicate morning glories glide along the body, their soft mauve and purple- glazed flowers translucent on the lustrous white ground. The vase is signed on the base both with the blue Koransha mark of FUKAGAWA as well as with the mark of MAKUZU KOZAN. A lustrous high-shouldered cloisonné vase with an ethereal grouping of three egrets posing in a marsh, surrounded by marvelous trees and bushes. The artist creates a subtle mood through use of wireless (musen) and wired imagery, allowing for unexpected glimpses of emerald hues against the pearly ground. A superb white studio porcelain vase of double-gourd form by the Imperial Court Artist SEIFU YOHEI III(1851-1914). It is worked in underglaze blue on a white lustrous ground. Luxuriant peonies in subtle shades of blue wrap around its luscious shape, rising ho-o birds (phoenix) with long tail feathers, visible on the reverse. This is an ingenious copper-patinated bronze and silver incense burner formed as a bamboo ikebana basket and used possibly in a shrine setting. The exterior is a tour-de-force of mat woven bronze with the rim executed in herring bone design, the interior silvered. The double -reed handles rise from the base of the basket and join at the top. Heightened by the use of a subtle white slip, the geese, depicted through fine abstract brushwork, appear to glide through the still waters, leaving behind gentle ripples. This is a small gold lacquer covered kobako (incense box) decorated with silver and gold lacquered flower buds and leaves in hiramaki-e (low relief) on a smoothly polished ground.
