A covered, round wood zushi executed with multi -colored lacquers on a rich red-lacquered ground, its lid with lotus petals in silver and gold hiramaki-e. The interior reveals Amida Buddha seated on a lotus throne carved in high relief with colored lacquers, the inside cover with lotus flowers and leaves swirling beside a meandering stream. An enchanting studio pottery piece modeled as a phoenix boat in the style of Ninsei. The fanciful bird is embellished with floral sprays, stylized feather-patterns and writhing dragon cartouches in gosu, iron red and green enamels with luxurious gilt detailing. This rare pottery piece is in excellent condition. Makuzu Kozan signature seal is found on the base. Includes tomobako. Length: 17.5" Late Meiji Period, Japan

In the tradition of jizai okimono, this silvered bronze crab features naturalistically articulated legs, pincers and gilt eyes. Chiseled and etched detailing for its extremities and carapace heighten the powerful realism of the piece. This marvelous jizai is in excellent condition with minimal wear. A semi-sukashi, mokko-shaped iron tsuba inlaid with sentoku in Heianjo style. Aoi leaves and fine tendrils on both sides are inlaid in suemon zogan style, the large areas inlaid with slightly- raised sentoku. (This elegant Heianjo style became popular during the Muromachi Period, continuing well into the Edo Period.) This marvelous example of the genre is in very good condition, its minor wear commensurate with age and use. Diameter: 3" Edo Period, Japan

This is a charming boxwood netsuke of two seated rabbits facing opposite directions, one with its paw on a persimmon branch.Their bodies are delicately modeled, the fine, incised work simulating the creatures' furry coats. Their eyes are inlaid with mother-of-pearl and the bottom of the piece is brilliantly carved to indicate their tails and the soles of their feet in the most naturalistic manner. Modeled in modified mei-ping form with skirted base, this studio porcelain is a work by the renowned Makuzu Kozan. A technical marvel, Kozan employed here a mauve-colored, tea-dust glaze for the ground with cascading wisteria in white silhouette. This porcelain vase has a small kiln mark of no consequence on its side, but is in great condition. Makuzu Kozan rectangular signature cartouche in underglaze blue found on the base. On a soft-blue enameled ground, a grape branch rises from the foot of the vase to the neck, its gnarled branch with budding flowers in white moriage.
