| This is a superbly executed celadon suiban (basin) depicting Shoki, the Demon Queller, pushing his boat-shaped container. The translucent quality and visual appeal of the celadon glaze highlights the incised details. The piece is enhanced by the look on Shoki's expressive face and by the movement of his robes. One of Japan's most renowned artist of the Meiji Period, especially recognized for his innovative glazes is the maker -the Imperial Court Artist (1896) Makuzu Kozan. The suiban is in excellent condition, with no cracks, chips or restoration. Makuzu Kozan signature on base. Length: 10" Circa 1910 (Meiji Period), Japan | ||||||||
