| Here is a fine kai-awase (shell-matching game), the gold and black lacquered kai-oke of octagonal form. The exterior of this storage box for the shell-matching game is designed with delicate sprays of peony flowers and scrolling vines in gold hiramaki-e on a mura-nashiji ground. Originally dating to the 12th Century Heian Period, this kai-awase is a smaller modified version - probably for young girls. The game includes a set of 15 clam shells, the interiors of each shell painted in mineral colors with gilt detailing (scenes of sakura, chrysanthemum, iris, grass, and bamboo, etc.). After placing half of the shells in the box, the purpose of the game is to match the imagery and shape of one shell with its corresponding half. This kai-awase is in very good condition, with minor wear considering its age. Height: 5", length: 5" Meiji Period, Japan | ||||||||
